On this page, I have collected some miscellaneous thoughts, none of which are directly related to programming but rather are life experiences.
The
Bottom Drawer
discusses how some scientists view the
unknown. The topic came up during one of those rambling
discussions with friends. I was accosted because I was
not concerned that currently (at that time) there was no
answer to a question posed by a participant. The general
opinion of my friends was that there had to be an answer
to all questions. Being trained in the scientific method,
I disagreed.
Hans Herman Gustafson
was my
father. He had significant influence on me and on others
with whom he came in contact. This page is my memorial
to the man.
On September 17, 2001, in the aftermath of 9-11, I wrote an
essay
that I never
mailed or forwarded to anyone. Having served in Vietnam
and having watched the difficulties that a Bosnia or
Somalia presented, I was convinced that our President
was a trifle off-balance. Had he participated during
Vietnam, I felt he would have been much more cautious in
involving us in Iraq and Afghanistan. But I never told
him and he never asked.
